Affordable Home Styling in Bristol: My Favourite Second Hand and Vintage Finds

Making a home feel beautifully styled does not have to cost a fortune.
Some of the most characterful interiors are not created in one big shopping trip. They come together slowly, through creativity, resourcefulness, and a good eye for pieces that already have a story to tell. In a city like Bristol, that feels especially true. We are surrounded by brilliant charity shops, reclamation yards, reuse stores and markets, which makes it much easier to create a home that feels personal without spending a small fortune.
Whether you are restyling with what you already own or looking for a few new-to-you pieces, there are plenty of ways to refresh your home on a budget and still make it feel thoughtful, layered and beautifully pulled together.
Start with what you have
Before buying anything new, I always begin by gathering together all the decorative pieces I already own. Vases, candles, books, framed artwork, trays, bowls, and those little objects that have been collected over time all come into one place.
It instantly helps me see what I have with fresh eyes. Very often, the pieces are there already. They just need editing, regrouping, or moving to a different room.
It is also the perfect excuse for a proper declutter. If there are items you no longer use or love, pass them on. Bristol is full of brilliant places where pre loved pieces can find a new home, from St Peter’s Hospice shops to Emmaus Bristol and the Bristol Waste Reuse Shops.
Curate more thoughtfully
Once I have gathered everything together, I start grouping pieces by colour, material or mood. That might mean a cluster of warm woods and brass, a few blue and green ceramics, or a mix of books and framed artwork that all speak to each other.
One of the simplest styling tricks is to leave some breathing space. Not every shelf needs to be full. Not every surface needs to prove a point. Leaving a little room around your favourite objects makes them stand out far more and stops the whole space feeling busy.

The power of three
I use this little trick constantly. Arranging objects in odd numbers often feels more natural and balanced than lining everything up in pairs.
Three pieces is usually the sweet spot on a shelf, console or side table. Try mixing height, texture and shape to keep things interesting. A stack of books, a candle holder and a ceramic vase can be enough to make a corner feel considered rather than accidental.
These images are from a lovely basement living room project in Totterdown, where built in shelving gave us the perfect opportunity to layer books, greenery and collected objects in a way that felt calm, characterful and balanced. Rather than overfilling every shelf, we focused on giving each piece space to breathe so the overall effect felt curated rather than cluttered.

My favourite Bristol spots for affordable home finds
If I do want to bring something new into a room, I nearly always start with second hand and reclaimed pieces. They bring so much more personality than buying everything brand new, and they often help a space feel more relaxed and individual too.
A few Bristol spots I would genuinely recommend keeping on your radar are:
St Peter’s Hospice shops - Brilliant for home accessories, furniture and the kind of unexpected finds that make styling more interesting. Their furniture shops and superstores are especially worth a look.
Emmaus Bristol - A great place for pre loved furniture, vintage pieces, mirrors, frames and homeware with real character. Their shops are full of the sort of pieces that can anchor a room without making it feel too polished.
Bristol Waste Reuse Shops - These are brilliant if you love the thrill of the hunt. They are affordable, practical and good for everything from furniture to smaller home bits, while also supporting reuse locally.
Wessex Reclamation - If you love older architectural pieces, reclaimed timber, fireplaces and fittings with proper age and charm, this is a brilliant resource. Just note that they currently operate by appointment, so it is one to plan ahead for.
St Nicholas Market - Perfect when you want the more eclectic side of Bristol. It is packed with independent traders and has that lovely rummage energy that often leads to one off finds.
Tobacco Factory Sunday Market - One of my favourite Sunday stops in Bristol for a browse. It is not strictly a vintage or interiors market, but it is a great place to discover local makers, independent businesses and the sort of characterful finds that can add personality to your home.
Final touches that cost little or nothing
Some of the best changes do not involve spending anything at all.
Swap pieces between rooms.
Move a lamp.
Restyle a shelf.
Rehang artwork.
Pull a chair in from another room.
Use books to lift smaller objects (see gallery above).
Bring a vase or bowl out of a cupboard and actually use it (remember the rule of three).
You can also swap with friends, repaint something tired, or give an old piece a second life with new handles, fabric or a fresh position in the room. Those small shifts can have a surprisingly big impact.
Small changes really do change a room
This is one of the things I love most about interior design. A home does not need to be expensive to feel special. It just needs care, attention and a bit of confidence.
Bristol makes that easier than most places. There is such a strong culture of creativity, reuse and independent shopping here, and that means there are endless ways to build a home that feels full of personality without overspending.
If you are trying to make your home feel more pulled together and want help choosing pieces that work with what you already own, I offer interior design support in Bristol that helps you create a home that feels personal, practical and beautifully you.
What are your favourite Bristol spots for second hand home finds? I am always up for a new recommendation.
